Economics is available at both AS and A-Level. As the subject is not studied at GCSE no prior knowledge is required but students are expected to have a least a Grade B in GCSE Mathematics and a Grade B in GCSE English Language. An interest in current economic affairs would also be of benefit.
Examination Boards
The examination board used is CCEA. The subject consists of 4 modules and students will study how the market works; problems with a market economy; the UK economy; how firms compete; the global economy including financial economics and development economics.
Students will learn valuable skills of data handling, analysis and evaluation. Material used in the course will be relevant to current economic problems with issues such as the housing market, climate change, the cost-of-living crisis, the impact of Brexit and globalisation discussed.
Completion of the A2 will leave students well equipped for careers in the world of accountancy, business, finance and the media. In addition, they will be well prepared to understand the world as citizens and consumers.
Extra-curricular
There are a range of extra curricular activities available to the students. Outside speakers have included the Finance Director of the Bank of England and students have visited the trading room in the finance department at Queens University.
